Week 2 – Pretty 1950′s inspired vintage headband scarves
Hi guys, it’s week 2 of our great Christmas Makes already. I hope you enjoyed Week 1 – which was DIY Coasters. I got totally carried away with that one and I’ve not done too badly with this weeks one either!
We are loving the big retro movement and at the moment there are 1950′s inspired scarves to be found everywhere. But you can easily make your own from the tiniest scrap of fabric and in exactly the colour you want. The fabric needs to be quite thin – don’t forget you will be tying it in a knot so if it’s thick it you will end up with a huge knot on your head! 100% cotton print fabrics are great and at the moment there are some wonderful patterns to be found. Normally small fabric stores will sell you 20cm pieces which will make 2 hair bands so this is a really cheap and fun idea to make. I’ve also just picked up some scraps of vintage fabric from a car boot sale.
There is a small amount of sewing involved (but really minimal) and my teenager has been turning these out like nobodies business.
What you will need:
- A piece of fabric measuring 9cm wide x 85cm long (I find this is a perfect size but you can make it as long as you want)
- Sewing machine with matching thread
- Knitting needle.
There really are tons of lovely pretty ditsy fabrics around at the moment or for something else a bit more 50′s Rockabilly try these ones -
1. Ok so cut your fabric strips to the measurements above. Do them all at the same time so when you start sewing you can just crack on. You can make them wider or longer if you prefer.
2. Fold in half, right side inwards and mark with a pencil as shown.
3. Sew from nearly to the middle out and across the corner on both ends leaving a gap as you will need to turn it inside out.
4. Trim excess and tidy thread.
5. Use a knitting needle to turn the headband inside out. Push the corner in and pull over the needle.
6. Pin middle opening and sew.
7. Machine sew quite near the edge to give a neat finish.
8. Tie off the thread and you’re all done.
Here are a few different ways to wear your headbands… (modelled by Rustic Angels Staff, children and puppy!)

So why not give it a go – it’s easy fun, cheap and a great Christmas gift.
