Retro Style actually encompasses many decades of style but particularly pertains to the 50's, 60's and 70's and the term itself is used to describe almost any item that is influenced by trends and styles of the past. The 1950's were an amazing and exciting decade of change. After 10 years of hardship, deprivation and the Second World War the 50's dawned as a bright new era. There was a feel-good factor and people were optimistic for the future. The public craved colour, fun and a new look for a new generation. There was also a new global awareness of popular culture through the growing influence of television and film. Use this link to see the article about Retro Style and all things retro on Wikipedia.
The 1951 Festival of Britain was described as a tonic for the nation. There were new designs in furniture, housing and interiors with new designers launching their careers and making new colourful fun designs available to the public.
In the 1950's it seemed that plastic might replace traditional ceramics for use in the dining room or picnics. The plastic imposters were made from melamine and could be moulded into any bright and colourful shapes. Today we see a resurgence of melamine products in the form of spotty plates, bowls, cups and trays. As these are practically unbreakable and fun they are great for children's parties, picnics and make great snack bowls.
As we are well into a new millennium we see more of 'what goes around comes around' as the desire for individuality resurfaces to give a new twist on retro style. Retro style is whimsical and fun with a lively feel to it, with bright colours and bold designs.
