Retro Recipes – Mother’s Day treats from our childhood

I recently came upon a long-forgotten treasure in the shape of my mum’s old cookery book from the 1950’s, from which she used to make us many afternoon treats when my sister and I were growing up.

Given our passion for all things retro, and with two lovely new ranges of tea party china and crockery just delivered to the cabin ( which make perfect Mother’s Day gifts) the Angels decided to have a Retro Bake-Up of our favourite recipes to serve up to our mums for a lovely Mothers Day Tea Party.

How gorgeous is our new Flight of Fancy crockery!

We also have this lovely Bake with Love and Made with Love range of crockery from Gisela Graham

Naturally, we wanted to share the fun with you, so we’ve created 3 videos, each with step by step instructions on how to make some family favourites that cooks of any age can rustle up quickly and easily.  They make a perfect introduction to baking for children, and a lovely reminder of the delicious treats we used to have as children ourselves.

So here are the ingredients for our first bake off – Melting Moments.

5oz Self Raising Flour
4oz Margarine of Butter
3oz Caster Sugar
Half and Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla Essence
Glace Cherries

Have a look at our Melting Moments video with full instructions here.

Next we made the good old Victoria Sandwich, whose recipe has remain unchanged for the last 50 years.  A firm favourite for an afternoon tea party.

This is what you need to make a Victoria Sandwich –

6oz Self-Raising Flour
6oz Caster Sugar
3 Eggs
6oz Margarine
Pinch of Salt
Vanilla Essence

Have a look at our Victoria Sandwich video here.

Last but not least we made some yummy shortbread which has always been one of my children’s favourites.

You will need –

3oz Plain or Self Raising Flour
1oz Cornflour
3oz Butter
2oz Caster Sugar

Grab some basic ingredients, your pinnie and some lovely crockery and make an afternoon tea to remember!

We hope you, or your little ones, enjoy recreating these retro recipes as much as we did!

Make Mothers Day tea even more special by serving your goodies on one of our lovely new ranges of china. Each item is sold separately so would make a lovely gift for Mum or Granny.  Available from Rustic Angels.

Don’t forget how you will be rewarded for all your hard work…..

Yum yum!!!

Happy Baking!
