James M. Caine not to be confused with Herman Cain. :) Speaking of that, I'm heading to Cain's Godfather biz to pig out? on pizza pie and salad. Cheers me lads and lassies!

@RichardElden Many? of the actors were too old for their part. Like the first captain (De Vreiss)

But ultimately, it doesn't matter,? because his performance was so good.

These guys all look way too old... I'm just reading this now for the first time and I imagine Willie as sort of a nerdy, pudgy kid you sort of want to slap in? the face.

Sadly, Bob Francis..who played "Willie Keith"in the movie version of "The Caine Mutiny"died in a? tradgtic accident after the film was released.

Maybe Bogart did not fit the age profile. Never the less; it is still arguably his greatest role. It was very powerful and convincing. He was nominated for an Oscar for it. ? This is my favorite film of his.

But if you go back to? the book, it's a converted WWI Destroyer - a 3rd rate ship at best.

Exactly,? Queeg was only supposed to be about thirty.
By: sockettuem. on 02 Sep 09, 19:27:18
In wartime, promotions come fast. For Queeg to be promotged to that rank in 8 years is completely within the realm of not only possibility, but probability. My father joined the Navy as an Ensign in 1942 and was discharged as a Lieutenant Commander (Same as? Queeg in the movie) in 1946. Dave USN (Ret)

Queeg had been an ensign only 8 years before. Bogart was ridiculously miscast. Most naval captains were only about 30-35 during World War? II.
By: Halo101st. on 12 Aug 09, 14:01:41
No, he was not. Not for? that era, anyway. Queeg could have been any age still eligible for command of a naval ship.

I think "The Caine Mutiny" reflected the overall morality of the era and the willingness, aka nerve, to do something about that which was deemed to be wrong at the time - although the JAG officer had a hell of a good argument. There is no way this? is "old," or Bogart too old, just because someone is too young to understand the way things used to be. Note that the real jerk in the film is a cowardly, self-centered Hollywood type... So what's new?
By: PeterFirthFan. on 22 Jun 09, 14:34:29
Bogart was far? too old, they should have casta better actor like Richard Widmark.

They ate the sthrawberies, I tell you.?
By: RubberIceCream. on 19 Oct 08, 23:09:15
The novel should be a required reading for every HS JR and SR or a choice to? view the film made mandatory before graduating. The JAG officers speech is dead on right. If you don't get the message please, stay home forever!
